Okay, so it’s less that I stumbled upon them than that I was introduced to them. The Scala & Kolacny Brothers Choir is a Belgian girls choir quickly gaining popularity for their unique arrangements of well-known songs. Conducted by Stijn Kolacny and accompanied by Steven Kolacny, the group was formed in 1996 and has gone on to put together 5 albums. Their songs are mostly specially arranged versions of popular songs. Their inspirations have ranged from Bjork to Radiohead, U2 to Rammstein. While also known for their own beautiful musical arrangements, it’s the distinct and hauntingly beautiful covers that have gained The Scala & Kolacny Brothers Choir the most notice. More recently, the Choir’s Depche Mode cover, Creep, was used in The Social Network’s trailer.
Okay, so here’s the bad news: most of their music is still unable to be purchased within the United States. itunes certainly doesn’t carry them– a real shame considering some of the random garbage you can find on there.
The good news? YouTube has a plethora of videos of their songs. Several are live performances that are just incredibly powerful.
